What is a Cloud Engineer according to TeamPilot?

A Cloud Engineer is the architect and guardian of the digital infrastructure. While a Backend Developer builds the engine, the Cloud Engineer builds the "factory" and the "highways" it runs on. At TeamPilot we define a Cloud Engineer as a shift from manual server management to Infrastructure as Code (IaC). They are responsible for designing, implementing, and managing scalable, resilient, and secure cloud environments that allow software to be deployed and scaled automatically.

Core Responsibilities

Cloud Architecture & Design: Designing high-availability infrastructure layouts on platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Using tools like Terraform, Pulumi, or CloudFormation to automate the provisioning of resources.

Cost Optimization: Monitoring cloud spend and implementing strategies to ensure the infrastructure is cost-effective (FinOps).

Security & Compliance: Implementing "Identity and Access Management" (IAM), firewalls, and encryption to ensure the cloud environment is "secure by design."

Disaster Recovery: Setting up automated backups, failover mechanisms, and recovery procedures to ensure 99.9% uptime.

Typical experience levels for Cloud Engineer

Junior 0–2 years Understands basic cloud services (EC2/S3/VPC). Can perform manual configurations and write simple scripts.

Mid-Level 3–5 years Proficient in IaC (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines. Can migrate on-prem workloads to the cloud and manage container orchestration (Docker/K8s).

Senior 5+ years Expert in multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud strategies. Focuses on serverless architecture, advanced security networking, and global scalability.

Lead 8+ years Strategic lead for the organization’s cloud roadmap. Defines governance, security standards, and drives the adoption of cutting-edge cloud-native tech.

How TeamPilot evaluates Cloud Engineer

We look for engineers who treat infrastructure with the same rigor as software development:

Automation Mindset: We look for a "never do the same task twice" attitude. If it can be scripted or automated through IaC, it should be.

Security-First Approach: Evaluation of how the candidate handles secrets management, network isolation, and the principle of least privilege.

System Reliability: How the candidate plans for failure. We look for experience with load balancing, auto-scaling, and health monitoring.

Cloud-Native Knowledge: Familiarity with modern paradigms like Kubernetes, Serverless (Lambda/Functions), and Microservices networking.
